Immerse yourself in Japanese culture with a hands-on home cooking class in Kyoto, where you'll learn to make authentic dishes including wagyu.
Go beyond sightseeing and dive deep into Japan's culinary heart with the Haru Cooking Class in Kyoto. This is not a large, impersonal demonstration; it's an intimate experience hosted in a local's home, offering a genuine taste of Japanese hospitality and culture. The class focuses on everyday, home-style dishes, giving you skills you can replicate back home. Winter in Kyoto is crisp and less crowded, making it a wonderful time to enjoy cozy indoor activities. You'll learn the fundamentals of Japanese cooking, from creating dashi (broth) to balancing flavors. The highlight for many is preparing and tasting premium wagyu beef. This experience offers incredible value, providing not just a meal, but a memorable cultural exchange and practical knowledge.
This non-vegetarian cooking class provides an in-depth, 3-4 hour culinary journey. The class size is intentionally kept small, with a maximum of eight guests, to ensure a personal and hands-on experience for everyone. The fee of 9,800 JPY (plus tax) covers all ingredients, instruction, and the full meal you prepare. The menu is seasonal but typically includes a soup and three other traditional dishes, culminating in a special treat: cooking with delicious, high-quality wagyu beef. Your instructors, Taro and his wife, provide thorough explanations of all the ingredients and cooking methods in English. You will learn the essentials of Japanese cuisine in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. A vegetarian option (excluding wagyu) is also available at a lower price, though it uses fish-based stock.
The class is conveniently located in a quiet residential neighborhood northeast of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, easily accessible by bus from major hubs like Kyoto Station. Before or after your class, you can explore the vast and beautiful grounds of the Imperial Palace, the former residence of Japan's Imperial Family. The area is also close to the Demachi Masugata Shopping Arcade, a charming local market where you can see the ingredients you just cooked with. A short bus ride will take you to the famous Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) or the serene philosophical path. This location provides a perfect starting point for exploring the northern part of Kyoto, away from the more crowded tourist centers, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the city's residents.
